1932 wurde Wharfedale von Gilbert Briggs gegründet, der die ersten Lautsprecher im Keller seines Hauses in Ilkley, Südengland, entwickelte. Als einer der ältesten Lautsprecherhersteller darf sich Wharfedale zu Recht als Vorreiter fast aller heutigen Schallwandler fühlen. Schließlich war es Gilbert Briggs, der 1945 erstmals unterschiedliche Chassis zur Wiedergabe unterschiedlicher Frequenzbereiche einsetzte und so den ersten 2-Wege Lautsprecher der Welt entwickelte.
